Here’s the new link:
We’ve come to the end of another year, and 2010 was a good year for movies. In just one short year, we received a slew of great movies:
Toy Story 3, Kick-Ass, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, The Social Network, Black Swan, Jonah Hex, Clash of the Titans.. the list goes on and on. (Some of those are…
I’m not holding my breath for the battle of Hogwarts. Don’t you remember how terrible the battle scene was at the end of the 6th? Almost non-existent is what it was. The first part of the Hallows did the books the most justice of all the others, so maybe the second part will as well. If not, assume that I will never see a movie again.
Yes, but the entirety of the sixth movie was an abortion of theatrical justice, therefore it (and the fourth) have been thrown out of the equation. The only thing I know for sure is that it will be POLARIZING.

(Some of those are jokes).
But now it’s 2011, and apart from the “If you haven’t seen ‘x’ yet” group (which for me is TRON, True Grit, Black Swan, 127 Hours, and Rabbit Hole), we’re starting over fresh. In honor of the new year, here is a list of movies I can’t wait for, and why (in no particular order…) (probably):
1. The Tree of Life (Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, dir. Terrence Malick) - May 27
The Tree of Life is about a family in the 1950s with three sons, the eldest of whom witnesses the “loss of innocence”. Add this log-line to the fact that Terrence Malick is one of the most talented writer/directors in Hollywood, AND one of the most elusive, and it’s on my watch list.
2. The Muppets (Jason Segel, Amy Adams, dir. James Bobin)
OH. MY. GOD. I shouldn’t have to explain to you why this is awesome, but I will. First of all, Jason Segel is a funny dude. He, along with Neil Patrick Harris, saves the otherwise painful “How I Met Your Mother”. Also, come on… “Freaks & Geeks”. Secondly, look at this cast: Amy Adams, Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Jack Black, Zach Galifianakis, Paul Rudd, Danny Trejo, Jane Lynch, Mickey Rooney, Jean-Claude Can Damme, Ed Helms, Ricky Gervais, plus the following RUMORED cast-members: Alan Arkin, Billy Crystal, Donald Glover, CHARLES GRODIN (Yes, the dad from Beethoven). This CAN’T be bad. Thirdly, it’s directed by James Bobin. You may not know his name, but I guarantee you know his body of work. He wrote (with Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie) and directed Flight of the Conchords as well as “Da Ali G Show”, and I for one could not be more excited about his Feature debut. Lastly, and MOST importantly, it’s the DAMNED MUPPETS. Case Closed.
3. Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (Daniel Radcliffe, Ralph Fiennes, dir. David Yates)
My feelings on these movies are fairly mixed, but it all boils down to this, if you love these movies, this will almost certainly be the best one. If you don’t love these movies, this one marks the end of all the nonsense. As for me, I just want to see the Battle of Hogwarts. And to look at that poster one more time. Seriously. It’s amazing.
Except I wish the castle was only on fire in the reflection, but that’s neither here nor there. This is still my favorite poster I’ve seen in a LONG time.
4. More Comic Book Movies
This one makes me excited and nervous. On the way are “Thor”, “Captain America: The First Avenger”, “Green Lantern”, “X-Men: First Class”, “Cowboys & Aliens”, and probably more by December. I can go either way with Joe Johnston (director of Captain America). For every “Rocketeer” he has a “Jumanji”, for every “October Sky”, there’s “The Wolfman” lurking around the corner waiting to devour me with his terrifying overuse of dutch-angle. (NOOOOOOO!!!!) On the other end of the spectrum, “Thor” is directed by Kenneth Branagh, so get excited about that one. Green Lantern looks amazing visually, but I haven’t seen enough to be confident about the movie as a whole. But with this many comic movies coming up this year, we’ve got to get at least one jewel… Right?
5. The Beaver (Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin, dir. Jodie Foster)
If you haven’t seen the trailer for this movie, go watch it now. Now. I’ll wait.
Good, huh? I know. If that doesn’t make you at least INTERESTED in this movie, I don’t know what will. Add to that Anton Yelchin, who is quickly becoming one of my favorite young actors. He was fantastic in “Charlie Bartlett” and “Star Trek”, and the ONLY redeeming part of “Terminator: Salvation”. He’s rapidly becoming one of those actors I’ll go see, regardless of what the movie is. All of that, and the fact that Gibson looks to be pretty much playing an extreme version of himself, make this a movie I can’t wait to see.
6. More from My Favorite Filmmakers (Super 8, M:I - Ghost Protocol, Red State, etc)
In March, Kevin Smith releases Red State, a horror film about fundamentalism in Middle-America. I’m, at the least, intrigued by this one. With John Goodman, Melissa Leo (The Fighter), and Kevin Pollak (The Usual Suspects), expect this to be worth mentioning, at the least.
In June, JJ Abrams (M:I 3, Star Trek) directs Super 8, which has been surprisingly successful at keeping everything about itself a secret. Due to this, I can’t really give good reasoning as to why I’m excited. I just know that all the marketing so far has been very reminiscent of Cloverfield, and that can’t be a bad sign.
In December, Brad Bird directs a new Mission Impossible movie (starring Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg). Weird, right? Whatever the project is, Brad Bird can handle it. He proved himself as a director with his feature length debut, The Iron Giant. If you haven’t seen this movie, RUN, don’t walk. It’s one of my favorites. The quality of The Incredibles goes with out saying. I’ll be watching whatever he does from now until he gives me SEVERAL reasons not to.
2010 was a great year for movies. Here’s to 2011 being another step in the right direction.
